Construction Safety Week: Back to Basics 🦺

Posted on May 1st 2026 by Hannah Clark.

As it is Construction Safety Week, we are looking at ways to improve site safety. We want to help prevent accidents before they happen.

Official Health and Safety Executive statistics reported that in 2024/25, most fatal and serious work accidents came from the construction industry. A mixture of falls from height, slips or trips, and entrapment by moving objects caused these injuries. As a result, we focus on finding a variety of cost-effective solutions to protect employees while they work.

On-site hazards are everywhere 👀

Accidents within the workplace do not just cause fatal accidents. They can lead to lifelong health conditions, which could affect their quality of life.

🚚 Heavy machinery (including cranes, excavators, and forklift trucks)
🪜 Working at height on ladders or scaffolding
🥽 Incorrect use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
🪛 Defective tools and equipment
💥 Falling objects from height
👂 Loud noise without hearing protection
🎒 Poorly organised storage areas are causing trips to occur
😷 Breathing in hazardous substances, such as dust or chemicals
💤 Fatigue and reduced alertness because of inadequate breaks

A construction site contains a variety of different hazards that could compromise a worker’s safety. However, doing risk assessments often can help identify these hazards. It also helps provide the right equipment and storage solutions. This can prevent potentially life-threatening accidents.

Effective PPE for everyone’s protection 🥽

Providing high-quality Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a legal requirement in the UK. Their purpose is to protect workers and one-off visitors from potential dangers, as well as to improve visibility. From daily workers to one-off visitors, our PPE gear protects anyone who enters a construction site.

Our range of work clothing includes a selection of hi-vis jackets, designed to improve the visibility of workers. This is a great way to help people see you across a construction site. People can still see you through dust clouds and inside heavy machinery.

In addition to this, we offer a variety of ear and head protection. This includes Vented Safety Helmets, and you should wear them to prevent injury from falling objects. The added ventilation also improved airflow, which can minimise discomfort when worn in humid or physically demanding environments.

Additionally, our Worksafe Folding Ear Defenders can provide hearing protection of up to 30.4dB, helping prevent future hearing difficulties. In addition, their foldable design makes them easy to carry at work. It also reduces the chance that workers forget to wear them.

Please note that protective clothing is only effective when used correctly and consistently. Therefore, we strongly encourage training sessions for employees on how to wear items correctly, such as respiratory masks. We also want them to understand the long-term diseases or illnesses that can occur if they do not wear PPE.

Focus on safe equipment and storage solutions 👷

Safety in the workplace does not just come from wearing the correct protective clothing and accessories. It can start with adding effective storage solutions around the workplace. From storing often-used tools correctly to providing a safe place for personal items, good storage prevents tripping hazards.

Protect tools with Toolsafe 🧰

Our wide range of Toolsafe Security Boxes protects essential equipment when not in use. It keeps valuable tools secure on site. They keep tools organised, reducing tripping hazards and the risk of injury if tools remain on.

Designed to fit power tools, hand tools, and specialist equipment, these boxes feature a thick steel exterior and a high-security 8-lever safety lock to prevent unauthorised access. They meet Fire Classification Standards EN 13501-1 and are made in the UK. This helps provide reliable protection for contents and for the workers who rely on them.

Each Toolsafe box comes as a standard model, or we can supply it with castors or fork pockets fitted to the base. This allows construction sites to choose the most suitable method of transportation based on terrain and available handling equipment.

The smallest Toolsafe® W850 x H400mm Security Box is ideal for storing high-value or frequently used equipment. From specialist measuring devices and pipe cutters to more standard power tools, these boxes offer a spacious and secure storage location.

For added convenience, the taller Toolsafe® W1200 x H1200mm Security Box has a built-in upper shelf. Ideal for quick assembly jobs on the go, it also stores small drill bits and batteries separately for better organisation.

Keep belongings safe with wire mesh lockers 🔐

Tripping hazards can be found everywhere within a construction site, including the staff changing area. Without proper organisational systems put into place, these areas can become cluttered and cause tripping hazards to become more frequent.

To prevent this, we recommend installing Wire Mesh Lockers in your workplace. They can be easily transported between job sites once a construction project has been completed. Their small surface area makes them easy to clean, minimising germs.

For organisation, the one-door and two-door lockers come with built-in coat hooks, perfect for hanging jackets. Boots and other items can also be stored in this locker. Therefore, it is the perfect storage system for keeping uniforms together in between busy shifts. The mesh exterior also improves air flow into each compartment, reducing odours and mould build-up.

Because the mesh design lets you see inside, supervisors and workers can quickly check contents without unlocking each unit. This helps control inventory and reduces the time spent looking for equipment.

Hazardous storage 🧴

Effective hazardous storage is critical to maintaining a safe and compliant construction site. Materials like fuels, chemicals, and hazardous equipment must be stored securely.

Installing effective Hazardous Storage Cabinets not only protects workers but also supports better site organisation. This reduces the likelihood of accidents caused by misplaced or improperly handled materials. During Construction Safety Week, it’s essential to review storage practices and ensure all hazardous items are controlled, labelled, and stored in line with site procedures and regulations.

The importance of worker welfare 🧘

The welfare of staff is also an important thing to consider during Construction Safety Week.

Fatigue remains a significant risk factor in construction. Inadequate breaks or limited welfare provision can reduce concentration, slow reaction times, and increase incident risk. Ensuring workers have access to appropriate rest facilities is a practical step in reducing risk and maintaining productivity.

To help, Canteen Furniture can be easily added to these sites. They provide workers with a space away from work to have a break, relax, and refuel at lunchtime. They must be durable and suitable for frequent use by a range of workers on their lunch breaks.

We offer a wide variety of different styles available to choose from, helping to accommodate different budgets and comfort levels. Our popular Fast Food Canteen Units provide a pre-built structure and provide workers with a space to chill out, whilst being wipeable after use.

Build a safe working culture this Construction Safety Week 🤝

Construction Safety Week provides an opportunity to reinforce a proactive safety culture across all levels of the site. While procedures and controls are essential, their effectiveness depends on consistent engagement from the workforce.

Site managers should encourage open communication, ensuring operatives feel confident raising concerns, reporting near misses, and highlighting unsafe conditions without delay. Use daily briefings and training days to reinforce expectations and address current site risks.

A strong safety culture is reflected in day-to-day behaviours. Use Construction Safety Week to build accountability. Make sure everyone thinks about safety in every task and decision.
