Posted on September 2nd 2024 by Libby Collins.

What is Zero Waste Week?🚮

Zero Waste Week happens the first week of September every year. This year from the 2nd to the 6th. This week ensures that awareness is spread and waste to landfill is reduced. It educates people around the world on the effects of their waste, and how managing your waste effectively can positively benefit the environment. By spreading the word about this pledge, it can encourage people to be more mindful and hope more care is taken towards waste around the world. Now is the perfect time to start efficient waste collecting with up to 30% OFF on our Wheelie Bins.

How can you make sure your waste is efficient?🤔

When taking care of your waste. It isn’t as simple as just throwing it away. There are many things you need to keep in mind to make the process effective. After it’s left your house, it makes it’s way down to the recycling centre where staff work hard to ensure everything can be reused. When sending it down to be recycled, it’s important your plastic is clean and dry. This can be as simple as running it under the tap and letting it air dry, before putting it into the bin. This makes the process faster and easier.

What colour is your waste?🎨

The different colours of bins can become overwhelming when you don’t know where to start. Each Local Council has different requirements on the size of your bin and what can go in it. Please check with your Council before ordering to ensure you have the correct bin. This is a rough guide of things that can be placed in each bin.

Green: General recycling is usually placed in here, newspapers, food and drink cans, yogurt pots etc.

Grey/Black: Non-recyclable waste such as paper, cardboard, tissues, food waste etc.

Yellow: Typically used by hospitals and GP surgeries for health related waste.

Red: Clean, dry, loose items such as egg cartons, glass, plastic containers etc.

Blue: Household and business recycling like paper and card.

What size will suit you best?📏

We understand that everyone’s waste levels are different, that’s why we have sizes ranging from 50L to 1100L to accommodate to a wide range of needs. Our best-selling size is the 240L bin which is typically the Council requirement. However, requirements can change in different locations so, make sure to check before purchasing.

The positives of Recycling♻️

When you recycle, you aren’t just improving waste management. There is many other positives that may not even cross your mind. In 2016, recycling created 757,000 jobs in a single year. The disposable costs of sending waste to landfill is higher than recycling, therefore maintaining money within the economy. When land is saved from becoming landfill, it can be used for houses, shops or growing crops. Which can also boost the economy. Recycling one tonne of paper also saves 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water and 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space. These benefits will impact everyone and can cause knock on effects into bettering our environment.

Spread the word!🗣

It is essential you spread the word this week about the positives of zero waste, and work towards being as efficient as you can. If your in the workplace, ensure staff know about this pledge and are all working together to recycle. Typically during this week in the workplace, competitions are set between staff to see who can recycle the most, with prizes at the end of the week. Simple things like this can encourage people to stay on top of their recycling. Games like this can also be used in schools, to teach students the importance of recycling. Staff can also be encouraged to bring food in reusable containers, and try not to waste food.

Cartridges 4 Planet Ark

This is a free campaign programme that workplaces can get involved in. If you use printer ink, your workspace can request for your ink cartridges to be collected or you can drop them off. To either be sent back to the manufacturer for reuse, or recycled into new products. This campaign ensures this waste will not enter landfill, and is an easy way you can get involved day-to-day to ensure you manage your waste within the workplace. It is important to be thinking of this matter all year round, not just this week!
