World Environment Day! 🌍

Posted on June 5th 2025 by Libby Collins.

World Environment Day for 2025, the theme is plastic pollution. The UK has a huge plastic problem. The UK produces more plastic waste per person than any other country in the world, second only to the US.

Each week, UK households throw away 1.7 billion pieces of plastic packaging. With the most common being plastic from snacks, fruit and vegetables.

What happens after we throw something away? 🌎

Many of us assume that once we throw away our waste, it’s safely recycled. However, every year, the UK dumps hundreds of millions of kilograms of plastic waste in places such as Malaysia and Turkey. No matter where our waste is sent, landfills and waste burning all negatively contribute to the same ecosystems.

The EIA works to keep pressure on the UK government to ban plastic waste exports. They campaign to ban single-use and non-essential plastics. By donating to this charity, you can help support this change.

What else can I do to help? ♻️

Regardless of this problem, it’s still vital to recycle your waste. If not, even more waste will be sent to landfills. When recycling waste, it’s important to ensure your knowledge is up to scratch. Here’s how to ensure your recycling is effective.

  • Ensure items are clean, empty and dry. If plastics are contaminated with food, they can no longer be recycled. Therefore, you must clean them.
  • Follow local guidelines. Check your council’s website, where there will be specific information on what can be recycled in your area.
  • Make sure you understand waste separation. Some areas require you to separate your waste, whereas some accept it all together, so be sure to check.
  • Don’t guess! If you’re unsure, don’t just put it in the recycling bin.
  • Black plastic is typically not accepted for recycling, so be sure to check this.
  • Reuse as much recyclable material as you can, this is the best way you can help!

New Recycling Legislation! 🚮

It’s important to notice the new legislation. This means that establishments with over 10 employees have to offer efficient waste separation. Dry recyclables, food waste, and other black bin waste must be disposed of and collected separately. With this in mind, it might be time to step up your recycling game!
